At a jungle hospital on the Ebola River, a tributary of the Congo, three people meet who couldn't be more different. Lars Petersen wants to buy illegally mined diamonds. Dr. Eduard Dupré came to the Congo many years ago as a missionary and doctor. Now he's only a doctor—he lost his faith long ago. And then there's his much-too-young wife Zola, who despite her African first name is Belgian by birth. Eduard Dupré struggles not only with tropical diseases but also with missing aid shipments and counterfeit, long-expired medications. In addition to the bitter realization that he cannot help many patients, there are marauding government troops, rebels, and slave hunters from Sudan. Then the Ebola epidemic breaks out again.
